This tutorial assumes your TikTok pixel is installed and checked. If not, start with install your Meta and TikTok pixels on Shopify.
TikTok sells some products within hours, and loses others money for weeks. The difference rarely comes down to campaign settings. It comes down to two things: does your product show well in short video, and do your videos speak TikTok's language?
When TikTok is the right choice
TikTok works when your product can be understood in a few seconds of video:
- It demonstrates: a kitchen gadget, a cleaning tool, a clever accessory.
- It transforms: skincare, storage, decor, with an honest before and after.
- It tells a story: a routine, an unboxing, a reaction, a surprising use.
TikTok is a weaker first choice if your product is hard to show, if your category's claim rules limit what you can say (health, weight loss), or if your budget can't hold the required minimum. In those cases, choosing your channel based on your product helps you find a better option.
Start with organic. Post videos of your product on a TikTok account for a few weeks. They cost nothing, they show you which angles hold attention, and the best ones will become your ads.
Step 1: account and pixel
- Install the TikTok app from the Shopify App Store, free.
- Create or connect your TikTok for Business account and ad account.
- Create your pixel, turn on the most complete data sharing (with the Events API), and sync your catalogue.
- Place a test order and check in Events Manager that the payment comes through once, with the right amount.
Step 2: the sales campaign
In TikTok Ads Manager, create a campaign with the sales objective, conversions on your website. Choose your pixel and the completed payment event. As on Meta, Traffic or Video views objectives find people who click or watch, not buyers.
TikTok also offers highly automated campaigns that handle audience, placements and bids for you. To start with little data, they can save time: what matters is still the quality of the videos you give them.
Step 3: structure and budget
- One campaign, one country, one objective.
- One or two ad groups, with a broad audience.
- Several videos per group, each with a different angle.
TikTok requires a minimum daily budget: $50 per day at campaign level, and $20 per day at ad group level. It's a real selection criterion: if that budget strains you, start with organic or another channel.
As with Meta, start from your maximum acquisition cost: a video that has spent two to three times that cost without selling has already given its answer. How to work out that cost is in your first Meta Ads campaign, and the break-even ROAS calculator does it for you.
Step 4: videos that look like TikTok
This is where it all happens. On TikTok, a video that looks like an ad gets skipped in a second. What works:
- Jump straight into the scene: no intro, no logo, the product or problem from the first frame.
- Shoot on a phone, vertically, with a real person and real hands.
- Talk like on TikTok: natural, direct, looking at the camera.
- Subtitles and readable on-screen text.
- Several angles: problem, demonstration, reaction, comparison, unboxing.
Avoid copying a trend unrelated to your product. A trend that doesn't show what your product does entertains, but doesn't sell. Hook and structure principles are detailed in creatives that work.
Spark Ads: promote an existing video
Spark Ads turn an already-published video into an ad, on your account or a creator's. The ad keeps the account name, comments and likes: it looks like content, not an advert.
It's the best way to go from organic to paid: when one of your videos performs well naturally, promote it. For a creator's video, they give you an authorisation code from their app, which you use in Ads Manager.
Step 5: read the results
Let it run several days without significant edits, then look in order:
- Retention: do people watch beyond the first seconds? If not, it's the hook.
- Clicks: do viewers click? If not, the video entertains but doesn't make people want to buy.
- Add to cart and payments: do visitors buy? If not, it's the product page, price or shipping.
- Cost per purchase compared to your maximum cost: that's what decides whether you continue.
A heavily watched video isn't necessarily a video that sells. Judge on purchases, not views. The full diagnosis is in read your campaign numbers.
Classic mistakes
- Recycling a Facebook ad without adapting it to TikTok's format and tone.
- Running only one video and concluding TikTok doesn't work.
- Judging on views rather than purchases.
- Launching without enough budget to hold the minimum for several days.
- Sending to a page that's slow on mobile: on TikTok, all traffic is mobile.
