On Meta or TikTok, you go after people who weren't thinking of your product. On Google, it's the opposite: they're already looking for it. They type "1 litre insulated bottle" or "adjustable laptop stand", and Google shows them products, with photo, price and store name. Being in those results means introducing yourself to someone already ready to buy.
Is Google right for your product?
Search Google for the words your customer would use to find your product. If Shopping ads show at the top, with products like yours, demand exists: Google is a good channel. If nothing shows, or only very different products, your product creates its own demand, and Meta or TikTok will suit it better. Choosing your channel based on your product details that logic.
On Google, your customer compares. Your price, photo and title sit next to your competitors'. A product clearly more expensive than the others, with no visible reason, will struggle there.
Step 1: connect Shopify to Google
- In the Shopify App Store, install the Google & YouTube app. It's free; ads are billed to your Google Ads account.
- Connect your Google account, then create or link your Google Merchant Center account.
- Choose the countries you sell to and the language.
- Let the app sync your products, prices, shipping and promotions to Merchant Center.
The app also installs Google's conversion tracking, so your purchases show up in Google Ads.
Step 2: appear for free
Once your products are approved in Merchant Center, they can appear in the free listings of the Shopping tab, without paying per click. That's free traffic from people searching for your product: turn it on as soon as your store is live, even if you don't plan to advertise yet.
Step 3: a clean product feed
On Google Shopping, there are no keywords to choose: Google reads your product data to decide when to show them. The quality of your feed is your campaign.
| Element | What works |
|---|---|
| Title | The words your customer types: product type, key feature, size, colour. "Stainless insulated bottle 1 L, keeps cold 24 h" rather than "Aqua Bottle" |
| Image | The product alone, on a light background, sharp, with no added text or logo |
| Price | Identical to your store's, to the cent |
| Availability | Up to date: an out-of-stock product listed as available causes problems |
| Shipping | The same rates and times as your store |
| Description | Clear, precise, no exaggerated promises |
Your Shopify titles are often written for the brand. For Google, they must describe the product. You can adjust them in the app, without changing the title shown on your store.
Step 4: avoid rejections and suspension
Merchant Center checks your store, not just your products. Young stores often see products rejected, or their account suspended for "misrepresentation". To avoid it:
- Visible contact details: email, address, contact page reachable from the footer.
- A clear returns and refunds policy, reachable from every page.
- Shipping costs and times shown before checkout. All explained in set up shipping and payments.
- Secure, working checkout.
- No exaggerated promises, no fake strikethrough price, no invented reviews.
- The same information everywhere: price, availability and shipping identical on your store and in Merchant Center.
If a product is rejected, Merchant Center says why in the products tab. Fix the cause on your store, the app resyncs.
Step 5: your first Performance Max campaign
From the Google & YouTube app, you can create a Performance Max campaign. It shows your products on Google Shopping, but also on Search, YouTube, Gmail and partner sites, using your feed and Google's AI.
- Choose the products to promote. To start, keep your best sellers, or a group of products consistent in price and margin.
- Set a daily budget you accept dedicating to the test.
- If the app offers it, add a profitability target aligned with your minimum ROAS, once the campaign has enough sales to use it.
- Add text and images if the app asks.
Let it learn for a few weeks before concluding: on Google, volume often builds more gradually than on Meta.
For more control, you can also create a Standard Shopping campaign directly in Google Ads. It only runs in Shopping, and lets you see and exclude searches that don't suit you.
Step 6: read the results
- Impressions: if your products barely appear, check Merchant Center first (rejections, warnings) before raising the budget.
- Clicks: few clicks despite impressions is often the title, photo or price against competitors.
- Sales and cost per sale: that's what decides. Always compare with your Shopify orders.

Classic mistakes
- Paying before having a clean feed: Google shows poorly described products poorly.
- Forgetting free listings, which cost nothing.
- Neglecting contact, returns and shipping pages, and getting suspended.
- Mixing all products in one campaign, whatever their margin.
- Judging in a few days a campaign that's still learning.
